Bernese Jura

Contrasts, enjoyment and quiet island moments

Lake, nature, science and tradition: a visit to the Bernese Jura reveals the many beautiful faces of the region.

Mont-Soleil – a place of contrasts

A sunny afternoon above St. Imier: suddenly the world goes dark for a few seconds. Not kites, but wind turbines 140 meters high cast their huge shadows over meadows and forests. Accompanied by the rhythmic flap, flap, flap, an almost surreal image emerges.

Contrasts meet here: traditional dry stone walls divide the green fields, while solar cells capture the sun in the immediate vicinity. Research has been carried out at the Mont-Soleil International Photovoltaic Center since 1990 and there is an observatory next to it, which can be visited as part of a guided tour. Those looking for less science will find panoramic views, nature and tranquillity – with an unobstructed view of the Chasseral.

In the footsteps of Rousseau – St. Peter’s Island

The next stop is on Lake Biel. From Biel, the boat takes you past vineyards and winegrowing villages such as Ligerz to St. Peter’s Island. While many passengers travel on to Murten, the island belongs to those who disembark here – and that is precisely what makes it so magical.

Only the lapping of the water can be heard until two coots squabble loudly over seaweed, breaking the silence for a short time. The philosopher Jean-Jacques Rousseau, who sought refuge here and wrote: “Nowhere did I feel so truly happy as on St. Peter’s Island in the middle of Lake Biel.”

Enjoyment on Lake Biel

Before heading back to Biel, it’s worth making a stop in the small winegrowing village of Ligerz. On the sun terrace of the Robert Andrey winery in Schafis, you can enjoy the view of the lake and the island one last time with a glass of wine.
