Discover Vaud -
Between the Swiss Riviera and summit experiences
A region full of contrasts unfolds between Lausanne and Montreux: Palm trees on the lakeshore, imposing mountains in the background and cultural treasures with an eventful history. Vaud is a piece of Switzerland with a southern flair.
Rochers-de-Naye – Fog, panorama and jackdaws
On the 2,042-metre-high Rochers-de-Naye, Montreux‘s local mountain, nature seems to stage its own spectacle. Jackdaws dance in the air, disappear in the mist and suddenly a window opens up with a view over Lac Léman, Montreux and as far as France. The ride on the historic Montreux Oberland Bernois cogwheel railroad is an experience in itself: 1,600 vertical meters, 55 minutes of travel time, always accompanied by spectacular views.
Montreux and Chillon Castle – Riviera charm and history
Montreux, world-famous for its jazz festival, is nestled between the lake, mountains and vineyards. A walk along the lakeside promenade leads past palm trees, flowers and the statue of Freddie Mercury directly to Chillon Castle.
The building, erected on a rocky island, was first mentioned in 1150, changed hands several times and is now the most visited monument in Switzerland. Visitors can discover it with guided tours or audio guides and immerse themselves in medieval history.
Lausanne – a hill town full of life
The cantonal capital of Lausanne impresses with its Notre-Dame Cathedral, whose organ has 6,737 pipes, and a 600-year-old tradition: even today, a night watchman calls out the time every hour from 10 pm to 2 am.
The city itself is characterized by ups and downs – from La Cité to Le Bourg and Saint-Laurent. For a more comfortable ride, take the metro that connects Lausanne Ouchy on the lake with the Aquatis aquarium. And those who love culture should not miss the Olympic Museum.
