Visiting the
MÜNCHNER
KUNSTAREAL
Quarter love Kunstareal and Maxvorstadt
A s head of the Kunstareal Munich office, Laura Schieferle also acts as an ambassador for the Museumsquartier and the neighboring Maxvorstadt district. She has the best tips for you to follow: „To get to know the district, a stroll along the magnificent Ludwigstrasse with the Siegestor in the style of a Roman triumphal arch, Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität, and the historic Odeonsplatz with the impressive Feldherrnhalle and Theatinerkirche is a great place to start. Türkenstrasse, with its many small stores, cafés, and restaurants – from the legendary Café Puck to the 3-star gourmet temple ‚Jan‘ in Luisenstrasse – could be a hot tip between visits to the museums.
Between Theresienstrasse and Amalienstrasse, you will find boutiques as well as unique galleries, with a little ‚Munich bohemia‘ in Café Jasmin. And in the beer garden of the Parkcafé, you can experience the proverbial Munich coziness. The great thing is that all these addresses are located around the Kunstareal and are within walking distance.“
If you visit the art area between the famous Königsplatz and Theresienstraße, you will find an extraordinary variety of museums, showcasing works from the glamorous high culture of Egypt to the Renaissance and the present day. To help you get your bearings, our ambassador has a brief overview for you: „The most diverse range of art, graphics, design, and architecture can certainly be found in the Pinakothek der Moderne, which houses four museums under one roof, while the Alte Pinakothek is dedicated to the Bavarian State Painting Collections and European works of art from the 14th to 18th centuries, featuring artists such as Dürer, Rubens, and Rembrandt.
In the Lenbachhaus, a historic artists’ villa, you will find the Blue Rider collection, and if you are interested in Pop Art and American art from the 1950s with Warhol & Co., you are in good hands at the Brandhorst Museum. The Glyptothek on Königsplatz is Munich’s oldest public museum and the only museum in the world dedicated solely to ancient sculpture. You can relax here in the enchanting inner courtyard with its café and rose garden.
Next is the impressive building of the State Museum of Egyptian Art – the only underground museum with daylight streaming in from the atrium. Is such a museum marathon suitable for families? Yes and yes, because all the museums are designed to be interesting for young people and offer corresponding programs to engage them.“
By the way, the geodata-based Kunstareal Walks provide you with background information on the architectural highlights on site at 12 stations – from Klenze′s Glyptothek to the Museum Brandhorst. With audio and video contributions, as well as picture galleries, you can immerse yourself in the history and architecture of the area. Simply access kunstareal.de on your mobile device and off you go.
If you prefer to explore with a city guide, you can book one of the Viertelliebe guided tours, which will take place every Saturday at 3 pm and Thursday at 6 pm in different neighborhoods starting in March 2024.
