SKURRILES from LISSABON

Anyone who has ever been to Lisbon knows: Lisbon’s streets are colorful. Art is as much a part of this city as the air it breathes. Over the years, an art scene has developed in the Portuguese capital that can be found in every nook and cranny of the metropolis – from the traditional azulejos (painted ceramic tiles) and international street art to the numerous art museums and sculptures scattered throughout the city.

Art that makes a real difference. Trash Art by Bordalo.

Lisbon-born artist Artur Bordalo, who works under his stage name Bordalo II, has enriched the city’s art scene for many years and is known worldwide for his work. The excessive production and consumption of things that lead to the constant production of waste and thus to the destruction of the planet are the central themes of his works. This garbage is the unique raw material that Bordalo II uses to construct small and large works intended to serve as carriers of a universal manifesto.

With his latest exhibition EVILUTION – a collection of large animal sculptures created from all kinds of urban waste – from scrap metal, garbage containers, plastic toys, tubes, ropes, and marine litter – the trash artist will be gracing the EDU Hub in Lisbon. The exhibition runs from October 08 to December 11.

A weekend full of art, design & wellbeing. At Martinhal Sagres in the western Algarve.

Every year in November, the luxury resort of Martinhal Sagres in the western Algarve is transformed into a vibrant oasis that brings together Portuguese artists, innovative luxury brands, interesting start-ups, and culinary highlights in one place. For three days, artists, designers, and brand ambassadors present their projects, reveal their inspiration, and provide insights into their creative processes.

Each year, an artist exhibits their work as an „Artista Residente“ in the resort, which was created especially for the weekend. This year, the focus is on the stories created by the Portuguese artist duo Oficina Marques – Gezo Marques and José Aparício Gonçalves – with their works of art. In numerous workshops, they show how they bring old objects back to life.

In addition to the two artists, the Art, Design & Wellbeing Weekend offers a creative supporting program, such as a Kokedama workshop by designer Fios Jardins Suspensos from Porto or a Gyrokinesis lesson with the fitness professionals from Equilibrium Lisboa in Lisbon. The weekend will be accompanied by culinary highlights from guest chefs Marta Caldeirão and André Coelho.

#artists’ quarter #pinkstreet Cais do Sodré is one of Lisbon’s hippest artists’ quarters. Numerous bars and clubs cluster around Pink Street. Pink Street was once a meeting place for sailors, criminals, and prostitutes. Today it shines brighter than ever before – scandalous buildings have been transformed into works of art, and the days of the „red light district“ are long gone. Today it is a place for jazz music, pubs, and jam sessions.
